The Toronto Chapter show raises funds for Sing Canada Harmony.

The Toronto Chapter held its annual Festive concert “Ring in the New Year”
at Metropolitan United Church in downtown Toronto on December 6th.
Both Toronto Northern Lights Chorus and Lakeshore Voices Chorus performed,
along with the Ontario District Champion quartet, Northern Pursuit.
Both choruses in the chapter have benefited from Sing Canada Harmony
scholarships, and in the spirit of paying it forward, $5 from each CD sold
at the concert is being donated to Sing Canada Harmony.

Harmony, Laughter, and New Voices: Peace Arch Chorus (PAC) Hosts a Joy-Filled Barbershop 101 Workshop
Peace Arch Chorus welcomed singers from across the Fraser Valley on November 1 for a day that blended education, community, and pure musical joy. Our PACappella Barbershop 101 Workshop brought together 20 enthusiastic participants—from seasoned choir members to brand-new singers—each ready to explore the world of four-part a cappella harmony. The focus of the day was to explore what makes barbershop a cappella music unique among chorus styles.

From the moment registration opened, the room buzzed with energy. New friendships formed over coffee, name-tag scribbles, and warm-up stretches as participants settled in for a full day of learning. Guided by our dedicated facilitators and supported by volunteers from Peace Arch Chorus, guests were introduced to the fundamentals of barbershop technique, vocal production, tuning skills, and part singing.

One participant, Natalia, reflected on how much the workshop offered:
“I learned so much about the basics of barbershop. I would recommend this workshop to all chorus singers—new or seasoned.”

Laughter echoed throughout the day as singers jumped into icebreakers, tried new vocal exercises, and discovered the thrill of “ringing” chords together. The afternoon performance brought the day’s learning to life, as participants joined forces in confident harmonies, shared smiles, and well-earned applause.
Longtime singer Carol shared that the workshop offered something meaningful even for experienced vocalists: “I had so much fun. Even as a seasoned singer, I learned new things—and a refresher is always great.”

We were also honoured by a visit from Isabella, representing BC MLA Jody Toor, who stopped by to see the workshop in action and cheer on our participants. Her encouragement was a wonderful reminder of the value of community arts and local support for music programs.

This event was made possible in part thanks to a generous grant from Sing Canada Harmony, whose commitment to fostering a cappella music in our communities helps moments like this come to life. We greatly appreciate their support. Learn more about this wonderful organisation at singcanadaharmony.ca.

Women in Harmony Chorus celebrates 50th Anniversary, participates in Choralfest tour and learns new tricks.

Dear Sing Canada Harmony Scholarship Committee members,

Greetings!  On behalf of the members of the Women in Harmony barbershop chorus based here in Brandon, Manitoba, I’d like to sincerely thank you for your kind awarding of a scholarship a while back.  The monies granted were utilised in three ways.  Firstly, the scholarship helped us to provide for the time spent at a two-day Fall retreat held on September 19th and 20th to prepare our repertoire for our 50th anniversary celebration show.

We worked on musicality and presentation to be able to really bring the music to life. We also used these monies to support the mounting of our October 18th “50 Years of Peace, Love and Harmony” show, doing extra special things to really pay tribute to the chorus’s existence for half a century.

To really make good use of the scholarship monies, we used the allotted amount to pay for the registration fee and facility rental for our participation in the Manitoba Choral Association’s Regional Choralfest tour, and we had a ball working with Scott Leithead from Edmonton on November 22nd.  Sing Canada Harmony has been so very generous to our organisation and allowing us to improve our singing and abilities as well as to better serve our audiences.

Sing Canada Harmony has been providing educational opportunities for singers, music educators and choral communities for 17 years and will continue to do so, thanks to the generosity of our donors. Your support has sent people to Harmony University, provided Zoom subscriptions that kept our musical communities in touch and communicating with each other during COVID. There are projects to produce a compilation of Canadian folk songs in the barbershop style, to purchase music and literacy resources, to support children’s choir programs in several communities and other innovative programs that provide singing opportunities for Canadians of all ages. Thanks to your generosity, we have been able to award over $1,000,000 in scholarships! Thank you!
