The Pacific Mennonite Children’s Choir has received scholarships to provide coaching, and learning experiences for the children and their musical leaders. They have shown significant progress as a result.

A former Sing Canada Harmony board member attended the Pacific Mennonite Children’s Choir (PMCC (pmcc.ca)) performance Hope for the World.  This was his review:
What a fantastic, enjoyable show.  Having attend previous performances, it was very evident that the choir has grown physically and vocally.  The choir is made up of three six distinct groups: Teenies (ages 5-6), Tinies (ages 7-8), Juniors (ages 9-11), Seniors (ages 12-18), Resonate (male changed voices, ages 12-18), and Alumni/Parent singers (graduates of the program and student parents).  This presentation had over 120 students participating, plus another 20-30 parents singing as a separate group.  The show also included professional musician Rosemary Siemens, her husband and 4-year old son, and three young dancers from the Fraser Valley Academy of Dance.

The concert was held at Central Heights United Church, an excellent performance facility often used for various community events.  It began with the premier of the film of Rosemary singing with the PMCC youth, then swung into the balance of the program.  The acoustics were superb and served the needs of the 300-400 member audience in attendance.  The show took approximately 2 and ¼ hours, including intermission.

The program was only available online, with QR codes placed around the foyer and onscreen in the sanctuary.  Sing Canada Harmony was listed as one of the Platinum Sponsors, and was given a special mention at the end of the performance for the scholarship received to assist several students to attend a special training session in Eugene, Oregon.

Overall, the funds that have been granted to this organization have been well spent to provide education and leadership to this exceptional group.  I look forward to our continued cooperation with PMCC and their continued growth.

Carole Maguire, 42 year member!

Edna Procter, 46 year member!

A great way to recognize people, <<First Name>>! With a gift to Sing Canada Harmony
At their Christmas party, members of the Women in Harmony chorus of Harmony Incorporated in Brandon, Manitoba made some special presentations to two of their long-standing members who were retiring from the chorus.  Carole Maguire (in the first pic) had been a member for 42 years and Edna Procter for 46 years!  In fact, Edna was a charter member of the chorus when the Brandon Barbershop Bells (as they were originally called) joined HI in 1975.  To honour Carole and Edna, WIH made donations to Sing Canada Harmony in the hopes that singers of all ages would be supported in finding their voice and grow to love the barbershop harmonies as much as these two women did.  Carole and Edna were tickled pink to have their contributions celebrated in this way!

Douglas Kuhl School of Music
This spring, the vocal ensemble at Douglas Kuhl School of Music participated in
its second season. The joy of this season was watching the students develop
friendships through music-making! Singing together is truly a communal
experience, and it was so enjoyable to see these students learn and grow
together! We performed in two concerts: The DKSM spring concert, and a
collaborative concert with the Winkler senior choir. At both concerts, we
performed three pieces, “I’m Homeward Bound”, a new arrangement of this
poem, “When I Grow Up”, from the musical Matilda, and “Somewhere”, from the
musical West Side Story. We also had the opportunity to sing “Edelweiss” along
with the senior choir. It was so exciting to see these two generations of
musicians working together!

Starting on Feb. 21, the Winkler Senior Choir offered it’s first in-person spring
session since 2020. Twenty-four enthusiastic seniors registered, and together
with the DKSM Vocal Ensemble, presented a concert on April 23. It was
wonderful to sing to an audience of roughly 275. The concert included
selections by both choral groups, three young instrumentalists, and soloist Ray
Giesbrecht. Gordon Billows of Sing Canada Harmony was in attendance and
presented DKSM with financial support for the two choirs. The concert
concluded with the combined choir performing Edelweiss. Many audience
members remarked how much they appreciated the variety and quality of the
performance. Clearly, the musicians were also delighted to be back with their
friends, sharing their music with the larger community.

Seniors sing and entertain others!
On behalf of our choir, Circle of Friends, I want to thank you for your generous scholarship. We are a senior group of ladies who in past years have practised in a member’s basement. With the help of your donation, we were able to rent a facility in our church which has been MUCh more conducive to singing and our 12-rowin12″ numbers. In past years our accompanist received what monies were left from honorariums we received at sing outs. This year we were able to compensate her at Christmas with a stipend of $300.00. Some of the scholarship was also used to photocopy music for new members and to purchase new music.

We had a very successful year with many members and many sing outs. As we entertain at senior residences and nursing homes, we do not charge. Some residences were able to give us an honorarium and some were not. Because of the scholarship, any honorariums we received were used to pay our accompanist for the second half of the season, with a little left over for new music this fall.

On behalf of Circle of Friends, please extend a sincere thank you to the board of directors of Sing Canada Harmony. The generous scholarship we received was greatly appreciated. Circle of Friends are looking forward to a future filled with harmony.

Yours truly,
Ruth Tweten,
Director Circle of Friends
