In spite of the pandemic situation over the past 18 months, a Chapter of Barbershop Singers has remained active. Western Hospitality Singers, who have been long-time supporters of Sing Canada Harmony’s scholarship program adopted a new name and brand, becoming ACAPPELLA ROAD. And in the spring of 2021 ACAPPELLA ROAD leaders were approached by an energetic young group of ladies who wanted to join the Barbershop Harmony Society as a ladies chorus affiliated with ACAPPELLA ROAD.
A ladies’ chorus in the Barbershop Harmony Society? The Barbershop Harmony Society, traditionally a men’s-only organization, had adopted a new vision ‘Everyone In Harmony’ several years ago. As part of this move, the Society embraced barbershop singing and membership in all of its forms and is open to everyone who loves to sing. In April 2021 ACAPPELLA ROAD welcomed this group of ladies who have formed a new ladies chorus called ‘Pitch Please’ to become full-fledged members of our Chapter.
The Chapter leadership is providing mentoring and other support as Pitch Please gets its feet on the ground and begins to grow. Starting from a core of nine singers this group has adopted their own Vision, Mission and Values and are continued to recruit new members. The leaders of the music teams for both Pitch Please and ACAPPELLA ROAD are working together in harmony. And two members of Pitch Please have been elected to the 2022 Board of the Chapter.
ACAPPELLA ROAD hosted a joint meeting of the two choruses on October 25. Each chorus performed for the other and several barbershop tags were rung together in the hall.
Pitch Please will be a featured performer on the annual spring show hosted by ACAPPELLA ROAD in April 2022 and we look forward to singing together at other events.
As Barbershop music evolves in the 21st Century to embrace barbershop choruses and quartets that are ladies, men and mixed formats, ACAPPELLA ROAD and Pitch Please look forward to working together to celebrate this wonderful musical genre and art form.
